Kyoto

You can still take a walk in Kyoto because it remains an ancient person's city scale. The grid of Heian-kyō (794) overlays directly onto modern streets — you walk a thousand years sideways at once. Cycle between temples, zen gardens, and bookstores whose staff hand-pick every title.

Istanbul

Every carpet shop makes you feel the last one swindled you. My grandmother's kilim is Anatolian geometry meeting Rothko — classical meets contemporary without either noticing. Byzantine mosaics above, street cats below, ice cream vendors in between. A 9pm–5am sleep schedule for a grandfather gym community only Istanbul would produce.
